Indoor Environment Verified — Questions from Guests and Hosts
If you have seen the Indoor Environment Verified™ mark on a rental listing and want to know what it means, or you host a property and are considering verification, this page answers the questions we are asked most.
What does the Indoor Environment Verified badge mean?
A property carrying the mark has been visited by a certified IEV operator who measured its indoor conditions to a fixed protocol, and those measurements met the IEV standard. It is not a self-assessment and not a claim the host makes about their own property. Someone independent showed up, measured, and the result was determined by IEV rather than by the person in the room.
What does IEV measure, and is it a mold test?
IEV measures four comfort-level conditions: carbon dioxide (CO2), airborne particulates (PM2.5), temperature, and relative humidity. IEV is not a mold test, not a home inspection, and not a health or safety assessment. It confirms the conditions that determine whether a space feels fresh, clean, and comfortable. Concerns about mold or other environmental hazards fall outside this service and require separate professional assessment.
Who performs the evaluation?
Certified IEV operators — trained by IEV, equipped to a single instrument specification, and required to follow the same protocol on every visit. The operator does not see the scoring thresholds and does not determine the outcome. All data is reviewed centrally by IEV before any designation is issued.
Do verified properties display different levels?
No. Every property that meets the standard displays the same Indoor Environment Verified™ mark. A guest should not have to learn a hierarchy to know what a badge means.
What does verification cost?
$150 for the annual on-site visit, plus $29 per property per month — $498 per property per year, all in. The monthly portion covers the property's listing in the IEV directory, its guest-facing verification page, and licensed use of the IEV mark. Portfolio rates are available for 25 properties or more.
How long does a designation last?
One year. Properties are re-verified on site annually. A designation lapses if it is not renewed or if the subscription is discontinued, at which point the property is removed from the IEV directory and all use of the mark must stop. A current mark always reflects a current result.
Where is IEV available?
IEV operates through a growing network of certified operators, and coverage expands as the network does. Communities currently served are listed in the site footer.
